About Sarah McPherson

My Pilates Journey

I got into Pilates at the age of 30 after a mountain bike injury me left me in chronic pain. A Consultant at Guys & Thomas had heard about this great new "thing" (there were only 3 studios in London at the time) and thought it worth me trying before I be referred for Spinal Surgery. I handed my trust to Pilates, working 1-2-1 in the studio on the Pilates Apparatus which is specifically designed for rehabilitation and within 6 months I was pain free. I also had a new inner strength and was much more toned than ever before even though I'd been fit and active all my life.

After continuing as a student for a few years in the Studio I decided I wanted to learn more about this remarkable method so went on to study with the Pilates Foundation with a Founding Member, who had brought the Pilates Method over from the States, completing the Comprehensive Teacher Training. At that time you had to be a dancer to be accepted to train with the Pilates Method so I had to do an additional 50 hours pre-training in the Studio before commencing the actual course. This is the highest level of training available, learning the Studio Apparatus and Matwork, and being able to understand the body and many common chronic conditions and injuries. It took over 2 years to complete and over 1550 hours teaching, practice, plus numerous examinations, and I haven't stopped learning since!

The following 12 years I taught in London’s top Classical Pilates Studios where I worked with a vast range of clients 1-2-1 on the Apparatus. It is this experience that really teaches you how to approach the chronic medical and musculoskeletal conditions that my clients come to Pilates for. Time and time again I am amazed by what I have seen can be achieved with commitment of patience and practice. During this period I also taught Pilates though my 2 pregnancies.

When I moved to East Sussex, I set up a Home Studio for private clients where I have the Reformer, Tower, Wunda Chair and Spine Corrector. I also started teaching matwork within Community Halls where I have educated clients from beginners to intermediate level. We have become a like a Pilates family.

I have worked with a vast range of people including mothers, retirees, ballet dancers, ice skaters, rugby players, golf players, horse riders, lawyers, designers, pop stars, TV presenters, from ages 9 to 89 years.
